Chiropractic Care Q & A

What’s the Theory Behind Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic is a holistic system of care designed around the concept that structure affects the function of the human body. Spinal alignment can affect whole-body health because the nerves that affect extremities and organs all run off the spinal cord. Chiropractic treatments are intended to optimize the function of the nervous system, which promotes whole-body health. In addition, chiropractors are trained in related concepts like nutrition.
How Does Chiropractic Care Work?
When the spine is in correct alignment, the nervous system can function correctly. For example, the upper back (thoracic area) is where the nerves that control heart rate and blood pressure leave the spinal cord. If the spine is out of alignment, those nerves can become irritated and cause an elevated heart rate and blood pressure. A chiropractor corrects a misaligned joint by applying quick, strong pressure which moves or twists the joint slightly beyond its normal range of motion. When the pressure is released, the joint relaxes into normal position.
Does Chiropractic Care Include Other Therapies?
In addition to spinal manipulation, a chiropractor can correct misalignment in other joints, like the shoulder, wrist, knee or ankle. Chiropractic also includes therapies like tissue massage and release, education about posture, exercise, body mechanics, and ergonomics — the efficiency of movement in a working environment. Chiropractors can teach people how to move, sit and stand in ways that can help prevent pain. Nutritional counseling also helps ensure optimum health.
How Long Does Chiropractic Care Take?
A full spinal manipulation treatment normally takes around 20 to 30 minutes. However, the duration of a full course of therapy varies depending on how long the problem has existed, the severity of the condition and the patient’s response to treatment. At least initially, several treatments a week may be necessary to help the muscles and other body structure regain optimum alignment; most people find symptoms are reduced or relieved within a few weeks. Maintenance therapy may also be helpful for some individuals, with regular appointments every few weeks or months.
